This live camera looks out over Sapporo, the largest city on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. The stream runs as an HD YouTube broadcast from the source, so you can check how the city looks right now. It is useful for a quick look at conditions before heading out.
Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and one of Japan's major northern cities, set on a broad plain at the foot of hills with the Toyohira and Toyohira rivers nearby. It is known for its wide, tree-lined avenues, its brewing history and its food, especially miso ramen and fresh seafood. The city grew quickly after the Meiji era and today combines a modern centre with easy access to the countryside.
Because the view shows an urban landscape, the most interesting moments are usually daylight hours when buildings, roads and traffic are clear. Depending on the angle, you may also notice the seasons: green summers, colourful autumns, and in winter the snow that gives the city its quiet, white character. Weather, cloud and haze will change how far you can see, so the live picture is a good indicator.
Sapporo has a cold, snowy winter and a mild, relatively dry summer, so late spring through early autumn is the most comfortable time to visit. The city is easy to explore on foot or by subway, and Mount Moiwa, with its night view, lies a few kilometres away. Nearby cameras on this page cover other parts of the city and the surrounding area.
