Santa Caterina - Valfurva Sunnyvalley
🇮🇹 Lombardy · Italy — Altitude 2715 m
This camera looks over Santa Caterina Valfurva, a high alpine village in the Valfurva valley of Lombardy. It is a useful window for anyone planning a ski trip, a summer hike or simply wanting to see how the mountains look right now from this altitude.
Santa Caterina sits at about 2,700 metres in the Valfurva, on the northern side of the Stelvio National Park. It is one of the highest inhabited places in Italian Lombardy and is known as a base for skiing, ski touring and walking among glaciers, larches and open alpine meadows. The valley's atmosphere changes quickly with altitude, and the village feels much more remote than its road access suggests.
The camera is a mountain view, so the sky, cloud cover and snow conditions tend to matter most. Mornings often bring the clearest air, while afternoon clouds can build over the peaks in summer. In winter the slopes and snow cover are the main subjects to watch. Depending on the view, you may see changing light on the surrounding ridges across the day, which is often the most interesting thing to follow.
At this height winters are long, cold and snowy, and summers are short and cool, which is why the village is busiest in ski season and again from late June to September for hiking. Spring can be unsettled. Nearby cameras cover the Plaghera slopes, the Centro Sci Fondo cross-country area, Bormio's Cima Bianca and I Forni, so you can compare conditions across the valley before you travel.
