🇮🇹 Aosta Valley · Italy — Altitude 3498 m
This camera looks out from the Refuge de Mantoue, a high mountain hut at about 3,500 metres in the Monte Rosa area of the Aosta Valley. It is a place to check conditions before a day in the high Alps, or simply to watch weather move over the glaciers.
The Refuge de Mantoue stands in the Monte Rosa massif, the second highest mountain range in the Alps, above the Gressoney valley in northwestern Italy. The area is known for glaciers, steep rock faces and some of the highest huts in Europe. Life here follows the mountains: routes are reached on foot or by cable car from the valley, and the landscape changes quickly with altitude and light.
Because the camera is at high altitude, the picture depends heavily on cloud, snow and wind. Depending on the view, you may see rock ridges, snowfields and passing clouds. Mornings often bring the clearest skies, while afternoon storms can build quickly in summer. Watch the sky above the peaks to judge how conditions may develop over the next few hours.
Summer, from roughly July to September, is the most practical season for walking and climbing here, when huts are open and snow is limited to the higher slopes. Temperatures at this height can drop sharply even in summer, and winds are often strong. Nearby cameras at Punta Indren, Gabiet, Sant’Anna and Colle Betta show other points in the Gressoney area, useful for comparing conditions along the valley.
