Ιερά μονή Μέγιστης Λαύρας - Αγιον Όρος
🇬🇷 Central Macedonia · Greece — Altitude 150 m
This live stream follows the Holy Monastery of Megisti Lavra, the oldest and largest monastery on Mount Athos in northern Greece. It suits anyone curious about the monastic republic, its quiet rhythm, or the weather over the Chalkidiki peninsula before planning a visit.
Megisti Lavra was founded in 963 by Saint Athanasios and sits on the eastern side of the Athos peninsula, close to the Aegean Sea. It is the first in the traditional order of precedence among the twenty Athonite monasteries and is known for its large stone complex, its ancient manuscripts and its chapels. The surrounding landscape is wooded and steep, with the sea below and the mountain rising above. Access to the peninsula is restricted, and visitors need a special entry permit issued in advance.
The camera is mounted on the Athos peninsula and is a useful way to observe the weather and light over the monastery and the coast. Its exact field of view depends on the setup, so you may see the monastic buildings, the sea or the hillside. Mornings and late afternoons often bring the clearest light and the most visible detail, while hazy or overcast days can soften the view. Clouds frequently gather over the mountain, which can be worth watching.
The region has hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, and spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for a visit. Ferries and boats connect the peninsula with Ouranoupoli, the usual gateway to Athos. Other cameras in the area include the view of Mount Athos itself and several island streams to the northeast, which give a wider picture of the Aegean weather.
