Yμηττός Αττικής Νότια
🇬🇷 Attica · Greece — Altitude 1000 m
This camera looks out from the southern side of Mount Hymettus, the mountain that rises above the eastern edge of Athens. It is a useful way to check how the city and the surrounding hills look right now, including haze and cloud over the plain. Local weather and time are shown below the player.
Hymettus is a limestone mountain in the Attica region of Greece, rising to about 1,000 metres above sea level. For centuries it has been known for its thyme-scented honey, its aromatic scrubland and its marble quarries that supplied building stone for Athens. The slopes are dry and rocky, with pine and shrubs, and the contrast between the green hillside and the urban sprawl below is what most people come to see.
The view is framed by the mountain and reaches across the Athenian basin, so the changing light over the city is the main attraction. Mornings often bring clearer air, while late afternoon light warms the slopes and the lower districts. Hazy days, strong winds or passing storms can change the scene quickly, so the live picture is more informative than any photograph.
Athens has hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, and the mountain is usually a few degrees cooler than the city centre. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the slopes. Nearby cameras at Kaisariani and Syntagma Square show the city from other points, and the Athens cam at the main entrance gives a closer street-level view.
