🇫🇷 Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur · France — Altitude 600 m
This live camera looks out over Gap and the Tallard side of the Hautes-Alpes valley, a mountain town at about 600 metres. Watch the stream to judge the sky, cloud build-up over the ridges and how the day is developing before you travel or head out.
Gap is the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes department in the southern French Alps, lying in a broad basin where several valleys meet. It is a practical base for exploring the Alps and the Durance valley, and the surrounding landscape moves quickly from farmland to high limestone peaks. The town has a calm, working character, with a lively centre and easy access to the mountains.
The view is most useful for reading the weather: morning mist in the valley, afternoon clouds forming over the higher ground, and the clearing that often follows a storm. Depending on the framing, you may see roofs, fields and the surrounding hills. Late afternoon light tends to bring out the relief of the slopes, and winter snow on the peaks changes the scene noticeably.
Gap has a mix of Mediterranean and Alpine influences, with warm, fairly dry summers and cold winters that can bring snow to the valley floor. Spring and early autumn are often the most comfortable seasons for walking. Nearby cameras on this site cover Montclar and Puy-Saint-Vincent, useful if you want to compare conditions higher up in the mountains.
