This live camera looks out over Utsjoki, a small village in Finnish Lapland close to the borders with Norway and Russia. It is a useful window onto Arctic conditions in the far north of Finland, whether you are planning a trip, following the seasons or simply curious about the weather in one of Europe's most northerly settlements.
Utsjoki lies on the Teno River, which forms much of the border with Norway. It is the northernmost municipality in Finland and one of the few places in the country where the Sami culture is part of everyday life. The landscape is open fjell tundra, birch scrub, lakes and river valleys, with a sense of space that is hard to find further south. Life here follows the seasons closely, from the long light of summer to the deep winter darkness.
Because the view is shaped by the surrounding tundra and sky, the most interesting moments depend on the weather and the time of year. In summer, the midnight sun keeps the scene bright around the clock, while in winter the light is short and low, and clear nights can bring the northern lights when the sky is dark enough. Snow, fog and changing cloud cover can alter the scene quickly, so it is worth checking back at different hours.
Winters are long and very cold, often well below freezing for months, while summers are short, mild and surprisingly lively. The best time to visit is generally late winter for snow and aurora, or summer for hiking and river life. Utsjoki is remote, and most visitors reach it by road from Ivalo or Inari. Other cameras in the region, including Inari, Kirkenes and Mehamn, give a sense of the wider northern landscape.
